Widow Rented Rotary Phone for 42 Years “A widow rented a rotary dial telephone for 42 years, paying what her family calculates as more than $14,000 for a now outdated phone.” 750,000 people in the US are still leasing their phones from AT&T—if they’re all paying the $29.10 Mrs. Strogen was, that’s more than $260 million a year for the phone company. I never got that whole “rent your phone” thing. My dad used to do that.
It never made sense to me, though. He spent about half the “go to Wal-Mart and buy the damn thing” price of the phones every month.
I’m kinda split on whether or not I call it a scam. I mean, you DO know what you pay, and if you go to the local Stuff-Mart you can see how much the phone is. Still, it is a bit dirty to charge as much as AT&T does/did to rent a phone.
