Almost certainly apocryphal, but sweet nonetheless.
Houtermans’s girlfriend in 1929, when he and Robert d’Escourt Atkinson made their calculations of stellar thermonuclear reactions, was physicist Charlotte Riefenstahl, who was courted by both Houtermans and J. Robert Oppenheimer. She married Houtermans, twice.
Just 16 years later the first atomic bomb was detonated in New Mexico, prompting Oppenheimer to famously recall a verse from the Hindu holy book, the Bhagavad Gita: “Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.”

Game over, these guys win.
I think one reason the Splash Mountain meme† is so evergreen (at least for me) is that it requires would-be participants to do some actual planning and then go out into the real world to execute those plans. Though quick MS Paint stick-figure jobs often induce more snorts than Splash Mountain shots, the latter’s rarity and the commitment involved make me appreciate them so much more.
†I wanted to link to a page with more examples of the Splash Mountain meme but the usual best source, Know Your Meme, apparently rolls it into the article for Photobombing, which doesn’t do it justice. Its roots probably predate widespread use of the internet (though not photobombing itself—google “oldest photobomb” and you’ll see candidates dating back almost as far as photography itself): A 1997 LA Times article archived by Snopes discusses the “Flash Mountain” phenomenon, i.e. people exposing themselves to amusement ride cameras, itself arguably a pre-internet meme. The article concludes with this quote from a theme park authority:
“This has been going on since parks first started installing these cameras in the 1970s. … The technology may change, but human nature won’t.”
