R Stevens interviewed The Diesel Sweeties creator recently inked a deal with United Feature Syndicate to put his brilliant comics in newspapers across the country, and now he’s doing the interview circuit. I am impressed more than surprised by his self-deprecating humbleness and obvious business (and media) savvy. He’ll be putting out seven strips a week, plus web-only stuff, and will retain an impressive amount of rights.
Fleen: How are you going to preserve your distinctive pixel style at the very small sizes of newspaper comics?
Stevens: I ordered some undiluted, raw pixels from Hokkaido, Japan. They are very expensive, but you can’t put a price tag on the squarest items known to man. I do not advise snorting them.
Reports of Garfield’s death greatly exaggerated Garfield cartoonist Jim Davis has refuted speculation that the cartoon cat is slowly starving to death in an abandoned house. The October, 1989 comic strips were simply a Halloween scare. Still, I’ll never be able to look at Garfield the same way again.
The Death of Garfield This YTMND digs up a set of Garfield comic strips from October 23-28, 1989 that are positively bleak. The strips are, indeed, authentic, as you can read them (in color) on the official Garfield web site. As Wikipedia points out, the strips seem to imply that all of the cheery Garfield strips since October ‘89 have been fantasies Garfield is playing out in his head to delude himself from realizing the dark turn his life has taken, as he slowly starves to death in an abandoned house.

Apple has the high-quality version. I can’t believe the cartoon started in 1987. My life has come full-circle. (via eclecticism)
